Hugo Hays

Farming and helping farmers has been the common thread in Hugo’s life. Originally from Uruguay, he trained in Business Management in Food and Agriculture. Managing farms and offering agronomic and management advice in Spain and Portugal, he headed UK’s Velcourt Iberian subsidiary, just as Eurep was appearing on the scene. He joined Eurepgap as Technical Manager and later Integrity Director in 2002, during a period of very high global growth for the organisation. Later he managed a 15 country EU funded development project in Southern Africa (SADC) centred around helping governments and private sector in the region to work together to improve food safety, strengthen food laboratories, and increase safe trade in agri-food products following SPS measures. Since 2013 he works for Fyffes, a major global producer and exporter of fruit, as Head of Food Safety, CSR and Sustainability, based in Central America. Since 2015 Hugo is member of the GlobalG.A.P. Board, representing the farmer constituency.
