Pura Natura from Adercarta

When it comes to fresh items like fruit and vegetables, it's particularly important to consumers that they can see the contents of the packaging. One alternative to plastic is the semitransparent packaging paper Pura Natura from Adercarta. The patented produce bag from Italy is especially sustainable and tear-resistant thanks to its innovative base design. The material is moisture-resistant and complies with European foodstuff directives. Pura Natura can be recycled in a number of ways: its paper printed with ecological water-based dye is biodegradable and can be composted, e.g. as a bag for organic waste. It can also be recycled with paper.

Seed planter HIGH PRECISION AI-640-SN can be configured to suit the customer's needs.

Agricola Italiana's HIGH PRECISION AI-640-SN seed planter was specially developed to sow lettuce and spinach seeds. They can be configured to suit the customer's wishes, which greatly reduces row spacing. In order to meet the needs of different types of soil, the seed planter can be equipped with rubber, stainless steel or furrow rollers. An optional liquid gas system prevents mud from solidifying on the roller. The rollers can also be supported hydraulically. The quantity of seeds to be deposited can be set via a single interface in the electrohydraulic transmission. This makes distribution easier and independent from the capstan.

Alma Seges hopes to reduce pesticide usage for lettuce farming with new cultivation methods.

Together with the Agriculture Department of the University of Naples Federico II, Alma Seges – a merger of Southern Italian fruit and vegetable producers – has developed a cultivation process for lettuce. Contrary to conventional agriculture, this processes uses fewer chemicals, in turn greatly reducing the negative effects on the consumer and the environment. But it also maximises the efficiency of production processes, and increases yields and product quality. This is achieved by adjustments to the cultivation schedule, such as automated recording of data on soil and planted cultures. An environmentally friendly fertiliser plan is defined and plant protection plans are optimised, resulting in a 70 per cent reduction in phytosanitary treatments.

New broccoli variety Redi is healthy, and can be prepared quickly and in a variety of ways.

Dutch seed producer Bejo has developed Redi, a purple broccoli that meets many consumers' demand for a healthy vegetable that is easy to prepare. The broccoli is packaged in recyclable cardboard. This broccoli with its tender stalk and small florets can be prepared in a wide variety of ways, from raw to roasted, steamed or boiled. The producer also provides recipe ideas. The broccoli is slightly more bitter than common varieties, and has a hint of sweetness. Thanks to its high glucosinolate and vitamin C content, Redi is an incredibly healthy vegetable. Its colour provides more antioxidants than green broccoli, which reinforces its effectiveness as a functional food.

The innovative storage management system BinOculus efficiently organises warehouse processes.

B2A is taking the opportunity to presents its storage management system BinOculus for the first time at FRUIT LOGISTICA 2020. The completely 3D system uses animations to simulate the goods' entire journey, both inside and outside of the production and storage facility, in order to control the complex processes of movement, storage and sorting of goods. It shows the goods' path from storage and removal from the storage facilities until sale. This allows for coordinated controlling of the flow of goods. BinOculus is based on RFID technology, with which load units moved by forklift can be localised and stored. The system minimises margins of error and shortens searching and inspection times.

The organic pineapple Dolcetto from Togo tastes sweet and juicy.

The organic pineapple Dolcetto is somewhat smaller and more oblong than other varieties and stands out for its sweet flavour. Its flesh is white and juicy. Even the core of the fruit, which is often woody in other varieties, can be eaten. The Dolcetto pineapple is flown from Togo, West Africa to Europe when it is ripe and can immediately be consumed. Its innovative, recyclable packaging makes it a real eye-catcher on the fruit shelf. The pineapple is cultivated by an internationally supported cooperative in its country of origin. The project hopes to advance ecological agriculture in Togo with 1,300 young farmers, one third of whom are women. They receive one third of the local price for their pineapples so that the cultivation helps improve their quality of living.

Fresh for longer

 Fresh for longer
The lettuces from COF Spa now last longer in the refrigerator.

Pre-cut salad is practical, but it wilts quickly. COF SpA from Italy has developed a new procedure to ensure that the salad stays fresh up to ten days after production. Two factors are crucial for longer lasting lettuce: firstly, COF SpA uses modern filtration systems. The physical process of reverse osmosis allows for the retention of microbiologically pure water. Carbon and sand also improve the water's chemical characteristics. Secondly, a water preparation system reduces chlorine consumption and is thus friendlier to the environment. The consumer ends up with a fresh and healthy product.

: The new reverse rotary cultivator from Collari makes it easier to prepare the soil for sowing.

On the occasion of FRUIT LOGISTICA 2020, Italian manufacturer Collari presents its new reverse rotary cultivator. This agricultural machine only requires one cycle to dig up stones and harvest residue, thereby preparing the soil for new sowing. It levels and packs the earth, but can also form dams and plant the seeds. Because there is no other preparatory or follow-up work, the producer saves on time. The fuel consumption is also lower, and the machine uses it efficiently. Working with the reverse rotary cultivator improves the drainage of the soil, because excess water can quickly seep away. The fine, even earth of the surface layer offers ideal conditions for the subsequent sowing or planting.

Resilient against mildew

The new basil variety Garibaldi is particularly resistant.

After years of research and development, Italian company CORA Seeds has developed a new basil variety called Garibaldi. It stands out for its high resistance to mildew, which was lab-tested with various pathogens. The flavourful plant can grow in pots, greenhouses, or in the field. The first customers of CORA Seeds who started planting Garibaldi during the 2018/2019 season were able to enjoy a massive increase in their basil harvest. This is because the reduction of leaf damage, spot formation, and yellowing also reduces costs for the producer. Garibaldi's leaves are medium to dark green and have the characteristic spoon shape and Genoese flavour.

Bluezone technology keeps fruit and vegetables fresh for longer

The Bluezone® was originally developed for the US military to make its provisions last longer. Now the technology is available on the European market. In order to improve the storage and transport of produce, the system works with UV-reinforced oxidation. By irradiating the air in a secure room with ultraviolet light, Bluezone® quickly eliminates the hormone ethylene that makes the products ripen faster. Moulds and bacteria are also destroyed. No filters or additives that have to be replaced or disposed of are required. Storage temperatures can also be increased, which saves on energy.

Harvesting, sorting and weighing with the VENTUM harvesting machine from Hortech

According to Italian manufacturer Hortech, the harvesting machine "Ventum" is over 50 per cent more efficient than traditional models. This increase is due in part to an air tunnel with two conveyor belts, one of which moves almost twice as quickly as the other. This allows for looser distribution of the harvested goods, making it easier to clean them via air stream. The machine also automatically packages the harvested goods into boxes and monitors its speed. The harvest can thus be directly brought to the transport vehicle, which means greater efficiency, flexibility and saved costs for the producer. And because the driver is sitting directly above the harvesting machinery, they have complete control over the harvesting work.

Let there be light

Let there be light
According to the manufacturer, HORTILED Top 120v19 is the most efficient LED light on the market.

With an efficiency factor of 3.5 µmol/Joule, the HORTILED Top 120v19 is the most efficient LED light on the market, according to the manufacturer. It is 84 per cent more efficient than the HPS 1000W. This not only has a positive impact on the user's electricity bill, but the light also emits far less heat and thus has only a minimal effect on the temperature in the greenhouse. The producer requires fewer lights for the same light level, which entails less strain on natural resources and the environment. Thanks to its clever design, the LED light takes up 25 per cent less transport volume, which is also better for the environment. They are easy to install in existing systems.

Smart packaging for tropical fruits

Smart packaging for tropical fruits
Smart Ripe from ILIP provides information on the ripeness of the packaged fruits.

Packaging normally serves to protect and preserve fruits. The smart packaging Smart Ripe from ILIP combines these characteristics with an additional function: it informs the entire supply and value added chain as well as the consumer of the fruits' ripeness stages by monitoring certain quality parameters with an sensor-operated and battery-free RFID tag. It can detect deviations of some dielectric parameters of the fruit flesh depending on the ripeness stage. This information can be decoded with an external reading device and informs the user of three stages of ripeness and potential types of preparation. This way, the consumer can plan the right times and types of use. After initial tests with avocados, the packaging has now been developed to cover other tropical fruits.

Cooling as needed

Cooling as needed
Small farmers can use cooling houses at InspiraFarms.

It is often difficult for small farmers in particular to appropriately cool their products. This usually leaves them at a disadvantage in the supply chain. InspiraFarms provides help with on-demand cooling houses. The company is already operating the first Pay-As-You-Chill cooling houses in Mexico and Kenya. Around 200 producers benefit from each facility, and have been able to increase their revenue by approximately 30 per cent. The fees are calculated by product type, quantity and cooling time. Flat rates and longer-term contracts are possible, too. Planning of new rural cooling centres always involves analysis and specification of the output level under consideration of customer requirements. InspiraFarms provides maintenance and upkeep of the cooling houses.

Paper instead of plastic

Paper instead of plastic
Produce can be packaged without plastic with the JASA Sleever

The company JASA developed the JASA Sleever as an alternative to plastic packaging. It is made from cardboard, and it securely and hygienically stores tablets of fruit and vegetables. The sleeve for square and rectangular tablets, pre-folded and glued on two sides, can be disposed of with paper waste. The produce is visible thanks to the product's innovative design. However, it is also protected and cannot easily be removed without breaking the packaging. A label on the underside holds the packaging together. It can be printed with a barcode or information about the product. JASA provides the right machines for constructing a fully automated line of Sleevers that the customer can integrate into their packaging line. The customer can generally continue using their current tablets.

The new machine from Keymac quickly packages fresh produce in cardboard sleeves.

Keymac Packaging Systems is presenting at FRUIT LOGISTICA for the first time. The company with production sites in Great Britain and the USA is bringing a new machine with it: the K101 Sleever for fresh produce like apples and pears. It is able to automatically place a cardboard box with loose products into a cardboard sleeve at a speed of up to 60 packages per minute. The result is a completely recyclable packaging that protects the contents and makes them visible, too. The recesses in the sleep also serve as practical handles. The K101 is compact, making it ideal for companies with limited space. Cut hygienically with water

Cut hygienically with water
Water jet cutting technology reliably and hygienically cuts up vegetables.

Water jet cutting has firmly established itself in many industrial fields. It is also ideal for cutting foods, because the consistently sharp "blade" only makes contact with the product one single time. Bacterial contamination and cross-contamination from unclean, conventional metal knives are not possible. The freshly cut products such as celery, leeks or lettuce last longer. There is no frictional heat during the cutting process. Because the products can be cut very precisely, there are higher yields and productivity. As a facility constructor for food processing companies, KMT Waterjet provides consultation on the integration of water cutting technology into companies' production systems.

The new folding box from La Linea Verde provides a clear view of the product.

As the Italian market leader in freshly cut lettuce, La Linea Verde has developed a new packaging design for its lettuce: a folding box made from partially recycled plastic that securely transports the lettuce mixes and keeps them fresh for a long time. Thanks to a reliable sealing system, the packaging is easy for the consumer to open and reseal. An anti-fogging system prevents the box from misting up on the inside. This provides a clear view of the contents. The lettuce looks good on the shelf and is attractive to the consumer. La Linea Verde kept the three Rs of sustainability in mind with its new packaging: reduce, reuse, recycle. It also uses less plastic, because 30 per cent of it is recycled PET. The box can be reused and is completely recyclable.

The apple variety Eplì stands out for its sweet and sour taste.

White fruit flesh, a red peel and an oblong shape define the Eplì apple. Its aroma is pleasantly fresh and sweet. Because of the tree's resistance to outside influences, the apple is easy to maintain during cultivation and requires little intervention. The fruit is ripe 15 days after the Golden Delicious, and is harvested in mid-October in the same production area as the Mela Rossa IGP (red apple) at the foot of the Monviso. The fruit has an average weight of 180 grams, a Brix of 15.2 and an acidity of 10.2 meg/100l. MAGIC DIMENSION from Ortomec harvests fresh produce in a predefined length.

As fresh products become ever more important in retail, so do consumers' demands. One important aspect here is the length of a product. With its new sensor system MAGIC DIMENSION, Ortomec makes it possible to harvest lettuce (to name one example) at a certain length to create a homogenous product. With help from a user-friendly push button panel, the user can determine the length of the product to be harvested. The sensor detects the distance between itself and the tip. The software developed by Ortomec sends the command to the knife to harvest the product at the desired length. Iron from algae

Iron from algae
BIOFERRO promotes healthy plant growth.

If plants don't get enough iron, they develop iron chlorosis. The plants form insufficient quantities of chlorophyll and their growth is inhibited. BIOFERRO is working against that. The iron chelate (Fe-HBED) with algae extract (Ascophyllum nodosum) is the world's first biostimulator for fighting iron chlorosis, according to the manufacturer. BIOFERRO stimulates germination, balanced growth and the development of the fruits. It prevents and resolves iron deficiency in all types of cultures and aids in increasing production compared to conventional chelate. Each kilogram of BIOFERRO contains the equivalent of 630 millilitres of pure Ascophyllum nodosum extract obtained from physical extraction. It has high mannitol, alginic acid, cytokinin and natural auxin content.

Pineapples are tasty and healthy, but are difficult to peel and core. Help has arrived in the form of the semiautomatic peeler and corer for pineapple cylinders from Italian company PND. The work is performed in three steps: after the user has placed the fruit inside the machine, it is first cored, then turned upside-down, and then peeled. The same machine can then cut the pineapple into pieces if the user wishes, such as in rings or chunks. The machine consists of stainless steel components that are easy to clean and maintain. All components can be replaced quickly and easily. The parts that come into contact with the fruit are made from food-safe materials. Bacterial protection for potatoes

Bacterial protection for potatoes
The ethylene generators from Restrain offer long-term bacterial protection for potatoes.

Because of the EU's ban on chlorpropham (CIPC) as a germination inhibitor for potatoes, producers have to seek out alternatives. Restrain, a company that is already operating in 36 countries, offers one sustainable option: ethylene generators. They have been used to store potatoes for over 14 years, and are equipped with unique sensors that ensure stable, low ethylene content. The generators have a holding capacity of 20 litres, meaning they do not have to be filled every day unlike other catalytic converters. Restrain improved the sensor technology for the new generator models B100 and B200. The generators require very little maintenance. They leave the factory completely calibrated and are thus ready for use right away.

The circulation deep fryer SFE – E is especially energy-friendly.

Schomaker Convenience Technik GmbH's deep fryers support convenience food producers' and large food service facilities' frying systems, from falafel and croquettes to veggie patties. The innovative SFE – E's circulation deep fryers are especially energy-efficient. They are ideal for large kitchens, butchers, delicatessens and cafeterias. Continuous rolling in the frying oil reduces the thermal load. The machines save about 35 per cent more frying oil compared to conventional models. The cooking and circulation time can be gradually set depending on the product requirements. Along with energy efficiency, the deep fryers' user-friendliness and cleaning were at the forefront during their development. According to the manufacturer, these frying systems have the safest fire protection system on the market.

Sprouts without bacteria

Sprouts without bacteria
SunGarden® Seed provides safe seeds for healthy sprouts.

Vegetable sprouts are extremely healthy and contain lots of power, because they are full of concentrated vitamins and minerals. Yet sprouts can also be dangerous to the consumer if the seeds are contaminated. That is why the brand SunGarden® Seed has developed what it calls the world's safest seed output. With its specially developed and validated process, SunGarden® Seed can deliver a bacterial reduction factor of Log6, while current industry standards can only achieve a reduction of Log3. This innovation thus not only drastically eliminates pathogens, but also uses an organic and non-thermal process that does not impair germination and the seeds' nutritional values.

Autumnal grape flavour

Autumnal grape flavour
The grape variety AUTUMNCRISP® tastes especially sweet and juicy.

The AUTUMNCRISP® variety of grape stands out for its sweet and juicy flavour with a light note of muscatel, and its firm texture. This makes it popular among consumers, but producers also benefit from its traits, because the grape's strong resistance to environmental influences makes it relatively low-maintenance during cultivation. As with all innovations from Sun World International, the development of this grape – which ripens in late autumn – requires much time and patience. The breeding and development of AUTUMNCRISP® took 18 years before it was ready for market, where it is now sold via partners in Australia, Africa, South America, North America, Europe and Israel.

The tomato is cultivated in multiple countries by select Syngenta Seeds partners and can be purchased in branded baskets, individually, or on the vine. Spicy asparagus with a kick

Spicy asparagus with a kick
The pickled asparagus tips from Teboza are a healthy and delicious snack

Family-owned company Teboza works along the entire chain of production, from the development of new varieties to cultivation to the sale of asparagus. And this company from the Netherlands is bringing an innovative product to FRUIT LOGISTICA: freshly peeled and spicy pickled asparagus tips in a glass jar. The pickled asparagus is made at times when a lot of fresh asparagus is available, preventing excess production on the market. At the same time, they meet customers' demand for easy-to-eat vegetables. The pickled asparagus tips' flavour is between that of pickles and normal asparagus in a jar, and the base juice is enriched with spices and herbs. This delicacy can be served cold, and is tasty as a side to a hearty snack or in a salad, for example.

With the new KI-Tool LUCAi™, KATO260 sorts blueberries with even more accuracy.

The KATO260 sorting machine was developed by BBC Technologies and Tomra Foods with the artificial intelligence-based tool LUCAi™. It allows the machine to sort the fruit even more precisely and selectively. LUCAi™ is specially suited to the characteristics of blueberries and can better qualify premium quality products through its more precise sorting, thereby meeting higher customer demands. Each berry is photographed by multiple cameras along a blueberry sorting line. LUCAi™ identifies traits that some people cannot perceive with the naked eye, and classifies the berries accordingly. The system can process up to 2,400 single images per second, with speed and precision facilitated by 17,408 graphic processors.

Plums without secrets

Plums without secrets
UNIQ Plum determines the ripeness of plums with high-resolution camera technology.

At FRUIT LOGISTICA 2020, the company UNITEC is presenting its market-ready UNIQ Plum technology that securely determines the inner quality of plums. To do this it uses high-resolution cameras that reliably and accurately reveal the organoleptic "secrets" of the plums. It does so with great care so as to preserve all the valuable characteristics of these fruits. UNIQ Plum grades the fruits by specific ripeness parameters and sorts them based on the storage and sales requirements for the various markets. Producers can thus offer the end consumer plums based on their respective taste and expectations. UNIQ Plum can also be easily integrated into the fruit and vegetable centres' software.

Precisely portioned

Precisely portioned
The RP1 template filler from Urbinati precisely fills plant containers.

Urbinati is introducing its new template filler: the RP1. This machine, with a funnel capacity of 480 litres, allows for the filling of round and quadratic pot shapes with soil. Customised screens let it fill the pots evenly without wasting any soil. The base density and sealing are determined by the steel blade cross-rotor, a key part of the machine. The functions of the main rotor, such as speed, direction of scoop rotation and number of rotations, are controlled by an SPS and can be easily programmed via touchscreen. The RP1 processes tablets up to a total height of 200 millimetres and adjusts the height of the middle group while the height of the conveyor belt remains constant. This is beneficial if the RP1 is mounted alongside other machines.

The VeeMee app gives consumers information on the origin of a product.

Increasingly more consumers want to know exactly where their food is produced. The smartphone app VeeMee was developed with the goal of giving agricultural products from family-owned companies a competitive advantage. When the customer scans a label, they can view the product's PID (producer identity) and thus its place of origin. The platform hosted by VeeMee provides all relevant information on the place of production, producers, and suppliers. The companies can increase their sale of produce as a result. They obtain valuable information on their uses and feedback for their products.

Securely transported

Securely transported
Volta Belting has developed a new belt material for conveyor belts.

The packaging and further processing of fresh produce is a precarious stage of the production chain. This is because foreign objects can access the food during this period, including metal particles or fragments of conveyor belts, such as plastic or fabric abrasion. Volta Belting is working toward more security and hygiene with a new, food-safe belt material. The material is suitable for most conveyor belts in the food industry and includes lugs, tracks and side walls. It can be installed on site in just a few minutes with butt welding. Furthermore, Volta Belting offers processed sprockets and pulleys. Shaped blue sprockets for DualDriveTM straps are available in select diameters.

International soup recipes inspired Zerbinati to create Le Zuppe dal Mondo.

Always on the lookout for new recipes and innovative ingredients, Italian company Zerbinati develoepd a new series of soups. With the title Le Zuppe dal Mondo (Soups of the World), it addresses consumers' demand for exotic flavours. Based on a social media competition organised by the Zerbinati marketing team, the company has developed a total of four new soups based on regional recipes: the American soup is a Vichyssoise with leek and potatoes. The French soup is an onion soup, and the Mexican soup is a sopa de frijoles with black beans and whole grain rice. For the Moroccan soup Zerbinati selected a Laadaas, a red lentil cream soup with turmeric.
