Improving occupational health and safety in the global banana industry – lessons from multi-stakeholder collaboration

The World Banana Forum is a space where the main stakeholders of the global banana supply chain work together to achieve consensus on best practices for sustainable production and trade. We believe collaboration is key for progress. The session will highlight achievements regarding health and safety in the industry – through the Banana Occupational Health and Safety Initiative – in efforts to improve labour conditions, and how these activities have been adapted to the broader needs and context of local stakeholders. A special focus will be given to activities in Ecuador and Ghana, in which the latter has integrated an important gender dimension to health and safety activities. Key challenges and next steps forward for improving health and safety in the industry will also be explored.
